The Swiss Embassy in Addis Ababa Advocates for HeForShe During the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence

In a powerful demonstration of commitment to gender equality, the Embassy of Switzerland in Addis Ababa contributed to a video project in support of the HeForShe movement to advocate for the crucial role men play in ending gender-based violence (GBV). This conversation took place during the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence, emphasizing the importance of collective action and dialogue. 

As part of the campaign, the Embassy developed a video series featuring an insightful conversation between Hanna Kidane, a dedicated young activist, and H.E. Ambassador Pietro Mona. Their discussion delved into the responsibilities men bear in addressing GBV and driving systemic change within their communities. 

Speaking on the issue, Hanna Kidane emphasized the need for male engagement in combating GBV: 

“I recommend men to be accountable and advocate for the rights of young women and girls. It’s half and half, the society is not only women or only men. So, when talking about gender-based violence, men should stand up and fight the stereotype that they should be left out of the conversations that we are having.” 

In response, Ambassador Mona reaffirmed his dedication to the cause, outlining three key commitments he has made as a man and as a leader to help end gender-based violence: 

1. Listening and Learning: Continue engaging with women and understanding their experiences of vulnerability caused by political, cultural, and social norms that perpetuate GBV. 

2. Speaking Out: Actively address the role of men and advocate against gender-based violence. 

3. Amplifying Voices: Use his platform and influence as an ambassador to elevate women's voices and their call for change. 

Recognizing the shared responsibility in combating GBV, Ambassador Mona emphasized:

“It is thereby critical to acknowledge that it’s not just a women’s issue; it’s about changing our behaviors, our attitudes, and our stereotypes as men.” 

This video is part of a four-part series designed to raise awareness and provide valuable insights into how men can take meaningful action in the fight against gender-based violence. The Embassy of Switzerland in support of HeForShe underscores a shared commitment to creating a world free from violence and discrimination.
