Every Man’s Responsibility

This 16 Days of Activism, join HeForShe by signing our open letter calling on men and boys to take an active role in preventing violence, challenging harmful social norms, holding themselves accountable, and helping create safer spaces for women and girls, both online and offline. Read the letter, add your signature and commit to turning words into action.

All women and girls have the right to live free from violence, harassment and fear. Ensuring that right is every man’s responsibility.

Violence against women and girls is not only a women’s issue. Men have an active responsibility to challenge the attitudes, behaviours and norms that normalize and tolerate violence — in our homes, friendships, workplaces, communities and online spaces — and to help build environments where all women and girls are safe, supported and able to access justice.

We cannot change what we are unwilling to confront. And we cannot end violence if men remain silent.

As a HeForShe, I commit to taking responsibility and to playing my part in creating a world where women and girls are safe, respected and  live free from violence.

I will:

Speak up. 
I will challenge sexist, misogynistic and harmful comments, attitudes and behaviours when I encounter them — whether among friends, at work, in public or online. Step in.
I will not ignore behaviour that contributes to harassment, abuse or violence. Where it is safe and appropriate, I will speak up and take action. Support survivors.
I will listen without judgement, respect survivors’ choices and help create environments where women and girls can access the support, services and justice they need. Lead by example.
I will reflect on my own attitudes and behaviours and contribute to relationships, workplaces, communities and online spaces grounded in respect and equality. Hold myself and others accountable. 
I will take responsibility for my own actions and encourage the men and boys around me to do the same. Responsibility starts with action
Signing this commitment is a starting point. I choose action and I am calling my male peers, friends, colleagues to join me in stopping and preventing violence against women in every space.
