HeForShe IMPACT Universities host inaugural Global Ideathons to end gender based violence on college campuses.
Earlier this year, the HeForShe IMPACT Universities launched their inaugural parity report and alongside this made a joint commitment to address gender based violence on their campuses and beyond. They have wasted no time! During the UN’s 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence campaign in November, the IMPACT Universities held Global Ideathons; bringing together students, staff and faculty to generate innovative solutions that work towards eliminating gender based violence on their campuses.
Students from all over the world took part in developing solutions to ensure the safety of everyone on campus. The group of 10 IMPACT universities span across eight countries on five continents: Georgetown University, USA; The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong; University of Leicester, UK; Nagoya University, Japan; The University of Oxford, UK; University of São Paulo, Brazil, Institut d’études politiques de Paris (Sciences Po), France; Stony Brook University, USA; University of Waterloo, Canada and University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa.
Solutions ranged from awareness campaigns to buddy safety systems to mobile applications. Students recognized that there is not one simple solution to eradicating gender based violence but that they can each contribute to a global toolkit of solutions that can be applied anywhere in the world. These passionate and dedicated students will not wait for others to ignite change; they have lead with the vision and determination to leap to bold action and the Ideathons provide a global platform to turn their challenges into solutions, quickening strides towards a gender-equal world.
This youth generation possesses the passion and commitment to lead the world towards gender equality and is at the forefront of the HeForShe movement; catalyzing irreversible change through innovative solutions that come directly from them.
