HeForShe Wrapped in 2021

2021 was a pivotal year for HeForShe. With the ongoing crises across our societies in health, jobs, and security, HeForShe remained steadfast in the work to rebuild better and engage men and boys for a gender-equal world. As we look forward to an even more impactful 2022, we wanted to take this time to celebrate the HeForShe milestones throughout 2021.

January:
In January, HeForShe launched the HeForShe monthly newsletter, which brought together partner updates, global news, and resources all in one place. Sign up to receive HeForShe news and updates here.

March:
On International Women’s Day, HeForShe issued a global call to leaders to join the newly formed HeForShe Alliance and help accelerate progress toward gender equality. Four high profile, inaugural partners joined as HeForShe Champions: Dr. Wayne A. I. Frederick, President of Howard University; Bruce Cleaver, CEO of De Beers Group; Bob Moritz, Global Chairman at PwC International Limited and Nick Read, CEO of Vodafone.

April:
In support of HeForShe, LEWIS conducted a global survey on the impact of COVID-19 on women in the workplace.  Though the ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic are layered and complex, its imbalanced impact on women is abundantly clear. The report highlighted the impact and perceptions of gender inequities during the pandemic across 13 countries.

May:
In May, HeForShe Champions convened at the virtual HeForShe Summit to release their tried and tested methods that aim to accelerate positive progress. Each HeForShe Champion joined the initiative by making ambitious commitments designed to accelerate progress towards gender equality. At the HeForShe Summit, they released the culmination of these commitments: their Proven Solutions.

June:
In collaboration with HeForShe, YPO and the Financial Times released new research on Global Chief Executive Gender Equality. YPO conducted this research to uncover ground-breaking insights about the journey women and men take to the corner office.

July:
The Generation Equality Forum convened a multi-stakeholder and inter-generational gathering with a clear goal of energizing and driving ambitious and new global commitments to achieve irreversible gender equality. From a male engagement perspective, HeForShe launched the 'Men for Generation Equality' campaign, which invited men and boys to join the efforts to achieve gender equality.

September:
In September, HeForShe convened the September Summit in which additional members of the HeForShe Alliance were named, including Yannick Bolloré, Chairman of Vivendi’s Supervisory Board and CEO and Chairman of Havas Group; John A. Zecca, Global Chief Legal & Regulatory Officer of Nasdaq; Bob Sternfels, Global Managing Partner of McKinsey & Company.

From the non-profit sector, HeForShe welcomed: Robert Mardini, Director-General, International Committee of the Red Cross; David Miliband, CEO & President of the International Rescue Committee; David Haggerty, President of the International Tennis Federation and Kate Robertson & David Jones, Founders of One Young World.

From the academic sector, Illian Milhov, Dean of INSEAD, joined Dr. Wayne A. I. Frederick, President of Howard University.

October:
The September Summit marked the start of a new era for HeForShe, an era of action. In October, HeForShe launched the #IDo campaign, a pivotal new campaign that shifted the narrative away from online commitments towards an era of ACTION. The social media campaign invited men and boys to take action in their daily lives while also signifying a messaging shift for HeForShe.

November:
This year the United Nations Secretary-General’s global campaign to end violence against women’s theme was “Orange the World: END VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN NOW!”. HeForShe was uniquely positioned to speak directly to men and boys supporting this movement. Specifically, HeForShe supported the 16 Days of Activism campaign by highlighting Champions who took action in the fight against VAWG and spotlighting success stories in allyship.

In November, the President of Zanzibar, H.E. Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, was announced as the newest HeForShe Champion. He joined other global leaders as the first Head of State in the newly formed HeForShe Alliance.

December
This holiday season, HeForShe is encouraging supporters to give back to end sexual harassment and gender-based violence. You can take action and donate directly to HeForShe through the UN Women donation platform here.
