The HeForShe Summit recently hosted a global dialogue with influential business leaders and experts who delved into the intricate balance between disruption and respect in propelling gender equality. Throughout the event, leaders echoed a resounding call to action to respectfully disrupt global inequalities. This was especially pronounced in the first panel, titled "Being Respectfully Disruptive for Gender Equality."

Panelists urged business leaders around the world to introduce mechanisms for accountability in making gender equality a business priority. Michael Roberts, CEO of HSBC US and Americas, shed light on the importance of inviting young women into traditionally male-dominated industries, such as finance, right from an early age. According to him, the foundation of gender representation lies in recruiting women at all organizational levels.

"I think first of all, you have to set the tone. And I think you have to be fully committed to it. You have to be willing to push the envelope and be respectfully disruptive, even if it feels unfamiliar and uncomfortable." - Michael Roberts, CEO of HSBC US and Americas.

Maha AlQattan, Group Chief Sustainability Officer of DP World, highlighted the importance of removing unconscious biases, leveling the playing field, and creating an inclusive environment. She also emphasized the need to look at talent as talent regardless of gender and to conduct data-based analyses of gaps and opportunities.

Nompilo Morafo, Chief Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Officer of MTN Group, further underscored the importance of moving beyond mere discussions of numbers to focus on actionable strategies. She stressed the significance of implementation, a phase often overlooked in corporate gender equality initiatives. Their message was clear: addressing gender equality should move beyond strategic planning and into the realm of tangible results.

The call to action from this panel underscored the essence of the "Respectfully Disruptive" theme—a recognition that the status quo must be challenged and that we must chart a new course toward gender equality. Central to this transformation is the inclusion of men as active partners in the journey. This summit served as an illuminating backdrop for the ongoing gender equality conversation, urging nations, corporations, and communities to rally together in the pursuit of transformative change.
