HeForShe in Mexcio higher education

Tecnológico de Monterrey has made history by becoming the first educational institution to join UN Women Mexico’s "Safe Campus for the Prevention of Gender Violence" programme, reinforcing its commitment to the global HeForShe movement and taking a significant stride towards fostering gender equality and preventing violence within its community.

Since aligning with the HeForShe movement in 2019, Tec de Monterrey has been at the forefront of championing gender equality. In 2021, it further solidified its dedication by presenting the "Gender Equality Plan 2021-2025," outlining a comprehensive set of policies and actions to advance equal opportunities for all members of the Tec community.

David Garza Salazar, Rector and Executive President of Tec de Monterrey, emphasized that this programme is a strategic move to reduce gender gaps, foster cultural transformation, and share valuable insights. The collaboration focuses on three key pillars, in alignment with HeForShe principles:

  1. Impact on the Tec community: Involving students, teachers, collaborators, and sports coaches to prevent gender violence.
  2. Internal transformation: Promoting policies and actions for gender equality within the Institution.
  3. Social transformation: Engaging the Tec community in transforming social norms and behaviors through joint communication actions.

HeForShe in Mexico

Belén Sanz Luque, UN Women's representative in Mexico, lauded Tec for being a trailblazer in joining the international HeForShe effort. She highlighted the pivotal role universities play as catalysts for positive change for women students. UN Women's methodology, proven successful in various cities, will now be applied for the first time at a university.

Inés Sáenz Negrete, Vice President of Inclusion, Social Impact, and Sustainability at Tec, underscored ongoing efforts to create inclusive spaces, redesign workspaces, and enhance physical accessibility. The establishment of the Center for the Recognition of Human Dignity and the Office of Gender and Safe Community further exemplifies Tec's commitment to addressing gender violence within the HeForShe framework.

Tec de Monterrey's steadfast involvement in the UN Women HeForShe movement, with nine commitments to promote gender equality and combat violence against women, cements its position as a leader in driving positive change. The Gender Equality Plan sets a clear course for institutional policies and actions, propelling progress toward equal opportunities within the Tec community.
