HeForShe Central Asia Movement addresses a complex set of challenges that continue to hinder progress toward gender equality and the effective prevention of gender-based violence (GBV). Among these challenges are deeply entrenched cultural and social norms, particularly in conservative and rural communities. These norms often reinforce stigma, discourage survivors from seeking support, and perpetuate harmful power dynamics.
In response, HeForShe Central Asia has implemented a series of impactful interventions aimed at shifting attitudes, behaviors, and social norms. One notable example occurred during the 2024 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. The panel discussion, titled Life Without Violence, held at the International Kazakh-Turkish University named after H.A. Yassawi in Turkestan, Kazakhstan. The event focused on the essential role of men and boys in ending gender-based violence and emphasized the importance of solidarity and active support for women and girls, core tenets of the HeForShe movement.
The key speaker at the event was Aziz Beishenaliyev, a prominent HeForShe Advocate for Central Asia. Born in 1971 in Frunze (now Bishkek), Kyrgyzstan, Aziz is an actor, screenwriter, and director whose life and career have spanned Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Kazakhstan, and the United States. He is a dedicated advocate for gender equality and has partnered with UN Women and the Central Asian Alliance to End Gender-Based Violence as part of the regional HeForShe campaign.
Through his public engagements, creative productions, and social media presence, Aziz consistently challenges gender stereotypes and promotes positive expressions of masculinity. He lends his voice to UN Women initiatives across Central Asia, advocating for the active involvement of men and boys in building a more equal world.
"It's an honor to stand with UN Women, the HeForShe Solidarity Movement for gender equality.
As a father, a husband, I believe deeply in the power of equal opportunity and respect for both women and men.
As a HeForShe Advocate, I'm committed to advancing equality within the creative world by challenging stereotypes, creating inclusive spaces for women. This is about more than words. It's about using our voices, our actions, and our work to stand together and build our future."
– Aziz Beishenaliyev, actor, screenwriter, and director
Aziz’s advocacy continues to inspire and engage audiences across the region, underscoring the vital role that men can play in advancing gender equality. His work with HeForShe Central Asia exemplifies how creative voices and cultural influences can help drive meaningful change and create a future free from gender-based violence.
