International Women's Day – Investing in Women to Accelerate Progress

Article Cover

On 8 March 2024, to commemorate International Women's Day (IWD), HeForShe will rally behind the call to 'Invest in women: Accelerate progress'. In a world facing multiple crises, achieving gender equality is more vital than ever. Securing the rights of women and girls across all spheres of life isn't just a moral imperative; it's the cornerstone of building prosperous, just economies and safeguarding a sustainable planet for generations to come.

This year's theme resonates profoundly with the ongoing efforts of the HeForShe Alliance, where both private sector and non-profit organizations are actively spearheading initiatives to advance women's empowerment and catalyze societal progress through their HeForShe Commitments. Through strategic investments and unwavering dedication, these organizations empower women and ignite transformative change across diverse sectors.

Notably, HeForShe Champions have yielded remarkable results within a relatively short timeframe. For example, between 2021 and 2022, 50% of Champions saw an increase in overall female representation within their companies compared to men, while 70% boosted female representation within the top echelons of their organizations. Moreover, 55% have elevated the percentage of women on their boards of directors. Additionally, 30% have expanded the number of new women hired (HeForShe Alliance Impact Report 2023).

"Gender balance is not merely a moral imperative. Research has shown us again and again that gender inclusivity in the workplace benefits everyone."

- Francisco Veloso, Dean of INSEAD

HeForShe Champions are positioned to champion gender equality, showcasing the remarkable impact of collaborative endeavors. Their efforts extend far beyond financial contributions; they encompass fostering inclusive workplaces, advocating for equal opportunities, and nurturing a culture of empowerment that transcends conventional boundaries.

"As a police service, it is imperative that we invest in women to ensure we have workforces that are reflective of our communities."

 - Chief Constable Jeremy Vaughan, UK Policing

Male allyship plays an important role in propelling gender-responsive actions forward. This International Women's Day, we implore male leaders to champion and actively implement gender equality initiatives within their organizations.

"We invite male leaders across all sports, industries, political and non-profit sectors to become male allies. Commit to making a tangible and measurable investment in women and guarantee your future growth."

 - David Haggerty, President of the International Tennis Federation.

International Women's Day serves as a reminder of our collective responsibility to invest in women, accelerate progress, and foster a world where every individual has the opportunity to thrive, irrespective of gender. As we celebrate the achievements of women, HeForShe issues a call to action to commit to creating a future where equality is not just an aspiration but a lived reality for all.
