When most people picture a mine worker, they imagine a man—and that’s no surprise. Mining has long been a male-dominated industry, shaped by traditional ideas of masculinity, leadership, and emotional restraint. But those norms are shifting, and I’m proud to be part of the movement driving that change.

Creating a more inclusive industry means challenging outdated gender norms and making space for women and underrepresented voices to lead and be heard. A recent report from Movember shed light on how online influencers are impacting young men’s mental health and sense of identity, highlighting the need for real-world examples of inclusive leadership. At Teck, we’re committed to being that positive example, and it’s why our partnership and my role as Champion with the HeForShe Alliance is so important to me.

As an organization, Teck is creating a workplace that is more equitable, respectful, diverse, and inclusive by setting a goal to increase women’s representation in our workforce to 30% by 2030. Beyond numbers, we’re taking action: investing in mentorship, peer support, and community partnerships—from the Moose Hide Campaign in North America to the Originarias program in South America—that challenge gender-based violence and empower Indigenous women.

These efforts are not just corporate initiatives: they’re personal to me. Every day, I work alongside talented women. Their leadership has shaped my own approach, and their shared experiences continue to strengthen my commitment to allyship. 

Importantly, our commitment to gender equity goes beyond our corporate offices and spans the breadth of our organization—from technical teams and operational crews to project managers and exploration specialists—across all our sites and operations. From the Red Dog zinc mine in the Alaskan tundra to the Quebrada Blanca copper mine in the mountains of Chile’s Atacama Desert, women in leadership and male allyship must be present everywhere we work to shift gender norms.

Traditional industries like mining are being reshaped by the growing number of women in senior leadership roles and by an emerging generation of leaders who are entering the workforce seeking purpose, connection, and authenticity. The leaders of tomorrow understand that equity and inclusion aren’t just ideals, they’re business imperatives. And gender equality isn’t just a responsibility—it’s a powerful opportunity. 

According to the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report, at the current rate, full global gender parity is still 123 years away—that’s unacceptable. Accelerating parity will require both strategic commitments and action. So to the next generation, I offer this call: be courageous, be an ally, and use your voice and influence to help make gender equality the norm—not the exception.
